GRP (Glass-Reinforced Plastic, also called GFRP or FRP – fibre-reinforced plastic – terminology varies by region) products are composite materials combining a polymer resin matrix – typically unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy – with glass fibre reinforcement. The glass fibres provide tensile strength and stiffness while the resin matrix binds the fibres, distributes load, and provides chemical and environmental resistance – combining the compressive strength of plastic resin with the tensile strength of glass fibre into a single material that resists both loading modes well.

Common Manufacturing Methods

  • Filament winding: continuous and chopped glass fibre reinforcement is applied onto a rotating, advancing mandrel, building the product from the inside outward – common for GRP pipe
  • Centrifugal casting: the product wall is built from the outside inward in a rotating mold, with chopped fibres and resin fed in via a moving feeder arm
