What Is ASTM D6344 Concentrated Impact Testing?

ASTM D6344 is the Standard Test Method for Concentrated Impacts to Transport Packages. It evaluates whether a fully loaded shipping package can withstand low-level, localized impacts typical of distribution — freight jostling against a package in a vehicle, accidental bumps during loading and unloading, or packages striking one another on conveyors and chutes. It’s best suited to thin fluted/lighter-grade corrugated boxes and stretch-wrapped packaging.

Test Procedure

The complete, filled transport package is impacted at pre-identified points using a solid steel rod with a rounded end, either as a guided free-fall (through a cylindrical guide tube) or pendulum-style swing, from specified heights and energy levels. Testing is typically performed on the package faces most likely to encounter concentrated impacts in distribution — small packages may be tested on all sides, while larger containers are typically tested on the four vertical sides and the top. If the package requires environmental conditioning (cold storage, controlled humidity), testing is conducted in that conditioned state.

Evaluation Criteria

ASTM D6344 also assesses whether there’s sufficient clearance or internal support between the package wall and its contents to resist deformation from an external impact. The test result is a pass/fail determination against acceptance criteria established beforehand (often drawn from ASTM D4169), along with a record of the energy dissipated by the package during the impact.

Concentrated impact testing fills a gap that standard drop and vibration testing doesn’t cover — localized point impacts rather than whole-package shock. It’s particularly relevant for lightweight corrugated and film-wrapped packaging where a single sharp impact, rather than an overall drop, is the more realistic failure mode.
