What Is ASTM D2732 Plastic Film Shrinkage?

ASTM D2732, Standard Test Method for Unrestrained Linear Thermal Shrinkage of Plastic Film and Sheeting, determines the degree of unrestrained linear thermal shrinkage that plastic film and sheeting exhibit at given specimen temperatures. It applies to material 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) thick or less. It doesn’t cover shrinkage caused by solvent loss in some materials. The currently listed designation is D2732-14(2025), a reapproval of the 2014 edition. The principle is simple. Manufacturing can lock internal stresses into oriented film, and heating releases them. The temperature at which shrinkage begins relates to processing history and, in some resins, to a phase transition of the base polymer, while the magnitude of shrinkage changes with temperature. So a material can be characterized across its shrinkage range and then controlled at a selected temperature for routine quality work. In practice, a square specimen is marked with its machine direction, conditioned where required, and placed without restraint in a heated liquid bath held to a tight temperature tolerance. The method specifies polyethylene glycol, glycerin, and water as suitable liquids, provided they do not plasticize or react with the film. Immersion is short. Afterward, the specimen is cooled quickly in a room-temperature liquid and measured with a millimeter ruler in both the machine and transverse directions. Percent shrinkage comes from the original and final lengths, and a negative result indicates elongation. What does the report record? The report records average free shrinkage in each direction, bath temperature, sample identification, and the number of specimens tested. Don’t confuse the method with ASTM D1204, which uses air as the heating medium, or with ASTM D2838, which measures restrained shrink tension and orientation release stress.

Applications and Benefits of ASTM D2732 Plastic Film Shrinkage Testing

    Scope

ASTM D2732 outlines procedures for measuring the percentage shrinkage of plastic films in machine and transverse directions after exposure to specified temperature conditions.

    • The method covers determination of the degree of unrestrained linear thermal shrinkage of plastic film and sheeting at given specimen temperatures.
    • Film and sheeting 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) in thickness or less.
    • Shrinkage that results from loss of solvent in some materials is explicitly excluded.
    • Two directions are measured, machine and transverse, so orientation differences are visible.
    • Specimens are heated in a liquid medium and left free to shrink. That’s what sets the method apart from restrained shrink-tension testing.
    • A material can be characterized across a range of temperatures, or its performance confirmed at a single selected temperature.
    • SI units are regarded as the standard, and the standard carries a safety disclaimer that the user must address.
    • ISO 11501 covers the same subject as this method, but its technical content is different, so the two are not interchangeable.
    • For air heating, see ASTM D1204, which addresses linear dimensional changes of nonrigid thermoplastic film; ASTM D2838 addresses restrained shrink tension.

    Applications

    • Heat-shrinkable packaging film can be characterized across its working temperature range.
    • Quality control on incoming or outgoing film rolls at a single specified temperature.
    • Machine-direction and transverse-direction shrinkage get compared to evaluate the degree of orientation built into a film.
    • Labs look at how extrusion, blowing, or stretching conditions affect locked-in internal stress.
    • Resin and film suppliers can be screened for lot-to-lot consistency of shrink behavior.
    • Process development for thin sheeting that will be thermoformed, laminated, or heat-sealed.

    Benefits

    • Free (unrestrained) shrinkage data that directly reflects how film behaves when released from stress.
    • You get directional results for both machine and transverse directions in a single test series.
    • The output is a simple percentage, easy to compare between lots, suppliers, and processing conditions.
    • Temperature is flexible. Use it for material characterization or for fast quality checks.
    • Reporting is clear and repeatable, and bath temperature and specimen count are included for traceability.

    Our ASTM D2732 Testing Procedure

    Specimen Preparation

Film samples are cut to specified dimensions and marked for machine and transverse direction measurements.

    1

    Initial Measurement

Original dimensions are measured accurately before heat exposure using calibrated instruments.

    2

    Thermal Exposure

Specimens are immersed in a controlled temperature medium or oven for a defined time period.

    3

    Final Measurement and Calculation

Dimensions are re-measured after exposure and shrinkage percentage is calculated for both directions.

    • Temperature-Controlled Liquid Bath – heats the immersion liquid to the selected test temperature and holds it within a tight tolerance.
    • Calibrated Thermometer or Temperature Probe – the bath temperature is checked with it before each specimen is immersed.
    • Free-Shrink Specimen Holder or Basket – supports one or several specimens so they can shrink without restraint or contact with each other.
    • Specimen Cutting Die, Template, or Marking Stamp – square specimens of consistent size, machine direction clearly marked.
    • Quench Container – a room-temperature liquid for rapid cooling of each specimen after immersion.
    • Millimetre-Graduated Ruler or Length-Measuring Device – measures final specimen length in both directions.
    • Conditioning Chamber – where conditioning is required, it stabilizes specimens at controlled laboratory conditions before testing.

ASTM D2732 Plastic Film Shrinkage FAQs

ASTM D2732 is a standard test method used to measure the shrinkage of plastic films when exposed to heat. It is important because it helps ensure dimensional stability and controlled shrink performance in packaging and labeling applications.

Shrinkage testing ensures films shrink uniformly and predictably, preventing defects such as wrinkling, distortion, or poor fit during packaging, labeling, or wrapping operations.

Machine direction refers to the direction of film production, while transverse direction is perpendicular to it. Shrinkage behavior can differ in these directions due to molecular orientation.

Factors include material composition, degree of orientation, processing conditions, temperature, and exposure time, all of which affect shrink behavior.

The test measures shrinkage under controlled conditions and may not fully replicate real-world application environments, so additional testing may be needed for comprehensive evaluation.
