What Is Sieve Analysis?

Sieve analysis is a particle size distribution test performed by passing a granular material through a series of progressively finer mesh sieves. Each sieve retains particles larger than its aperture size, and the mass retained on each sieve is recorded as a percentage of the total sample mass. The result is a particle size distribution curve that characterises the gradation of the material.

Sieve analysis is governed by standards including ASTM C136, ASTM D422, ASTM E11, and ISO 3310, and is one of the oldest, most cost-effective, and widely applicable analytical techniques in materials characterisation.

How Is Sieve Analysis Performed?

Equipment and Procedure

A set of standardised test sieves — typically manufactured from stainless steel wire mesh with aperture sizes ranging from 75 µm to 125 mm — is stacked in descending order of mesh size. The dried sample is placed on the top (coarsest) sieve, and the stack is mechanically agitated for a defined period using a sieve shaker.

After agitation, the material retained on each sieve is weighed. Cumulative percentage passing and retained values are calculated and plotted to produce a particle size distribution curve.

Key Parameters Determined

  • D10, D50, D60: Particle diameters at 10%, 50%, and 60% cumulative passing
  • Coefficient of Uniformity (Cu): Indicates the breadth of particle size distribution
  • Coefficient of Curvature (Cc): Describes the shape of the gradation curve

Importance of Sieve Analysis Across Industries

Geotechnical and Civil Engineering

Soil gradation is fundamental to geotechnical engineering. The particle size distribution of soils determines their classification (USCS, AASHTO), permeability, compaction behaviour, and suitability for use as structural fill, road subbase, or foundation material.

Aggregate and Concrete Industry

The gradation of coarse and fine aggregates directly affects the workability, strength, and durability of concrete. ASTM C33 specifies grading limits for concrete aggregates, and sieve analysis is the standard method for verification.

Mining and Minerals Processing

Ore particle size distribution determines crushing and grinding efficiency, screening performance, and hydrometallurgical leaching rates. Sieve analysis provides rapid, inexpensive size data at every stage of the comminution circuit.

Powder Metallurgy and Advanced Materials

Metal powders for additive manufacturing (3D printing), powder metallurgy, and thermal spray coatings require precise particle size distributions to ensure flowability, packing density, and consistent sintering behaviour.

Plastics and Rubber Compounding

Fillers, reinforcing agents, and polymer pellets used in plastics and rubber compounding are characterised by sieve analysis to verify particle size specifications and ensure batch consistency.

Environmental Monitoring

Sediment and particulate matter in water and wastewater streams are characterised by sieve analysis for pollution monitoring and treatment system design.

Limitations of Sieve Analysis

While sieve analysis is versatile and economical, it has limitations. It cannot characterise sub-100 µm particles accurately due to agglomeration and electrostatic effects. For fine powders, laser diffraction or dynamic light scattering methods are more appropriate.

Conclusion

Sieve analysis remains one of the most fundamental and widely used methods for determining particle size distribution in granular materials. By providing critical parameters like particle size distribution, uniformity, and gradation characteristics, sieve analysis supports material selection, quality control, and process optimisation. Although it has limitations for very fine particles, it remains indispensable for coarse and medium-sized materials in engineering, manufacturing, and environmental applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is sieve analysis used for?

Sieve analysis is used to determine the particle size distribution of granular materials such as soils, aggregates, powders, and minerals.

What is meant by particle size distribution?

It refers to the proportion of particles of different sizes within a material sample, usually expressed as a percentage of total mass.

What are D10, D50, and D60 values?

These represent particle diameters at which 10%, 50%, and 60% of the sample passes through the sieve stack, respectively.

What are the limitations of sieve analysis?

It is less accurate for particles smaller than about 100 µm due to agglomeration and electrostatic effects, making other methods like laser diffraction more suitable for fine powders.

Which industries commonly use sieve analysis?

Industries include construction, mining, pharmaceuticals, powder metallurgy, plastics, and environmental monitoring.
