    Overview

ASTM D2369 is a standardized test method that determines the weight percent volatile content of solvent-borne and waterborne coatings under specified heating conditions.

This test method measures the amount of material that evaporates from a coating when it is heated, thus determining the volatile matter and non-volatile (solid) content of the coating. This information is very useful for paint manufacturers, users, and environmental regulatory agencies.

    Scope, Applications, and Benefits

    Scope

ASTM D2369 applies to coatings that are solvent-based or waterborne. It measures the amount of the coating that is volatile versus non-volatile (solids content) by heating a sample in a controlled oven. As the volatile materials evaporate, the weight of the residue left is measured, and the solid content percentage is calculated from this weight.

    Applications

    • Quality control of paints and coatings
    • Determination of solids content in formulations
    • Environmental compliance and VOC assessment
    • Product formulation and development
    • Performance evaluation of industrial coatings
    • Regulatory reporting
    • Research and development of eco-friendly coatings

    Benefits

    • Determines volatile emissions from coatings
    • Measures solids (non-volatile) content accurately
    • Supports environmental compliance
    • Improves formulation control
    • Ensures batch-to-batch consistency
    • Provides standardized and repeatable results
    • Assists in VOC regulation adherence

    Test Process

    Sample Preparation

The coating sample is collected as per ASTM D3925, placed in a pre-weighed aluminum dish (W₁), accurately weighed, and prepared in duplicate.

    1

    Oven Heating

The dish is heated at 110 ± 5 °C for 60 minutes in a forced draft oven.

    2

    Cooling and Weighing

The dish is cooled in a desiccator and reweighed (W₂).

    3

    Calculation

Percent volatile and non-volatile matter are calculated from the recorded weights.
