ASTM D412 Tensile Stress-Strain & Set Testing for Vulcanized Rubber

ASTM D412: All elastomeric materials are put to the test to see if they can withstand the tensile forces required for performance. Testing for Tensile Strength of Thermoplastic Elastomers and Vulcanized Rubber by ASTM D412 is used to find materials that perform well under the temperature and pressure experienced by the material during routine operation. However, due to the vast range of potential performance needs in actual usage, tensile qualities by themselves may not directly correlate to the product's overall end use performance. What Is ASTM D412 Rubber Tensile Stress Strain?

ASTM D412 is a standardized test method used to determine the tensile properties of elastomers, including tensile strength, elongation, and tensile set. Tensile set measures the permanent deformation remaining after stretching and recovery, which is critical for evaluating elastic recovery behavior.

The method is widely used for rubber and elastomeric materials in applications where long-term deformation and recovery performance are essential, such as seals, gaskets, and flexible components.

Applications and Benefits of ASTM D412 Rubber Tensile Stress Strain Testing

    Scope

ASTM D412 covers the determination of the tensile properties of vulcanized rubber and thermoplastic elastomers. The properties include tensile strength, elongation, and modulus. The standard also specifies the tensile set, or permanent deformation, after elongation.

    ASTM D412 evaluates:

    • Tensile strength and elongation of elastomers
    • Tensile set (permanent deformation after stretching)
    • Elastic recovery behavior of rubber materials
    • Performance under repeated or sustained strain
    • Comparative evaluation of elastomer compounds

    Applications

    • Automotive seals, gaskets, and hoses
    • O-rings and packers in oil and gas applications
    • Medical silicone tubing and elastomeric devices
    • Aerospace seals and vibration isolators
    • Industrial conveyor belts and rubber sheets
    • Cable insulation and jacketing materials
    • Footwear soles and flexible consumer products
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic hose compounds

    Benefits

    • Measures permanent deformation after tensile loading
    • Evaluates elastic recovery performance
    • Supports material selection for sealing applications
    • Identifies long-term deformation risks
    • Enables comparison of elastomer formulations

    Our ASTM D412 Testing Procedure

    Specimen Preparation

Prepare standard dumbbell or ring-shaped specimens with specified dimensions and condition them as required.

    1

    Initial Measurement

Measure original gauge length and mark reference points before stretching.

    2

    Elongation & Holding

Stretch the specimen to the specified elongation, hold for the defined time, then release and allow recovery.

    3

    Final Measurement & Calculation

Measure the final gauge length after recovery and calculate tensile set as per ASTM International.

ASTM D412 Rubber Tensile Stress Strain FAQs

ASTM D412 Tensile Set: This test measures the elasticity of rubber by stretching a specimen to a predetermined elongation, holding it for a predetermined time, and then releasing it to determine the amount of permanent deformation.

This is the ability of a rubber to recover its original dimensions after being stretched. High values of tensile set imply permanent deformation, which may result in a loss of sealing force and a reduced functional life.

ASTM D412 Tensile Set tests are commonly employed in the manufacturing, and consumer products sectors where elastomer parts are required to retain their elastic properties and dimensions under conditions of repeated or sustained deformation.

ASTM D412 Tensile Set calls for dog-bone-shaped specimens, usually Die C or Die D, to be removed from flat rubber sheets. Finished parts can also be tested or cut up if their geometry permits.

Tensile set is calculated using the formula ((L₂ – L₀) / L₀) × 100, where L₀ is the original length and L₂ is the final length after recovery, representing permanent deformation percentage.
