Optical testing measures the properties that describe how a material interacts with light – how much it transmits, reflects, or absorbs; how it scatters or diffuses light; its color; its surface gloss; and fundamental optical constants such as refractive index. These properties matter wherever a material’s appearance, clarity, or light-handling behavior is part of its performance specification: packaging films and glazing that must be clear and haze-free, coatings that must meet a defined gloss or color, lenses and optical components that must meet precise transmittance or refractive index requirements, and materials that must maintain their optical properties after aging or exposure.
The most widely used materials optical tests are haze and luminous transmittance (ASTM D1003), which together characterize how clear and how light-scattering a transparent material is; gloss measurement (ASTM D523); color measurement in CIELAB or other color spaces using spectrophotometry; and refractive index determination. For architectural glass, solar control glazing, and window materials, spectral transmittance and solar/visible/UV properties are characterized per relevant standards. For optical components and photonic systems, more specialized measurements address surface figure, wavefront error, focal length, and aberration.
Optical properties are sensitive to material composition, surface condition, processing, and degradation, making optical testing an important quality-control and incoming-inspection tool as well as a characterization technique in product development.

Scope
Optical testing covers the measurement of the optical properties of transparent, translucent, and opaque materials – including light transmission, haze, color, gloss, and refractive index – as well as the performance testing of optical components and systems.

- Haze and luminous transmittance – the percentage of transmitted light that is scattered by wide angles (haze) and the total light transmitted through the specimen (ASTM D1003); the primary clarity test for transparent plastics, films, and glazing

Specimens are placed in an environmental chamber and exposed to programmed periods of high humidity, condensation, drying and temperature changes. The cycle is repeated for a specified duration.
Condensation testing exposes specimens to water forming directly on their surfaces under controlled humidity and temperature conditions. It evaluates resistance to blistering, corrosion and coating degradation.
Testing may reveal rust, blistering, peeling, swelling, staining, cracking and adhesive failure. Electronics may also experience leakage current, corrosion, insulation loss or functional instability.
Exposure may last from several days to several weeks, depending on the standard and required number of cycles. Longer testing may be used for product qualification or comparative durability studies.
