Scope:
The torque strength of ultraviolet light-cured glass or metal adhesive joints is determined using the ASTM D3685 test procedure. This test method can be used to compare torque strength-to-failure data for different bonded joint systems, whether or not they are radiation cured. This test procedure yields reasonably accurate results in terms of the UV curing adhesives’ capacity to endure torsional shearing pressures. This test method can also be used to see how the environment affects torsional shear strength.
Manual assembly practices are also appropriate for UV curable adhesives. Because the glass/metal will not cure until it is exposed to light, users can make fine alignment modifications before joining.
Test procedure:
Standard bonded specimens are produced, irradiated, loaded, and tested under defined conditions for the ASTM D3685 test process. The specimens are placed in the holding fixture, making sure that there is no lateral movement. Then, mechanically or with the aid of a constant drive loader, a torque is applied to the hex nut assembly at a rate of 0.5 rpm until failure occurs. The load at failure, as well as the nature and extent of the failure, are all noted.
Specimen size:
UV bonded hexagonal metal blocks and glass plates are used as test specimens for the ASTM D3685 test procedure.
Data:
As per the ASTM D3685 test method, all failure loads are expressed in lbf·in. (or N·m).
Conclusion:
The torque strength of ultraviolet light-cured glass or metal adhesive joints is determined using the ASTM D3685 test procedure.
