    Overview

ASTM D7558 describes a standard colorimetric or spectrophotometric procedure for the determination of specific analytes in chemical, industrial, or environmental matrices. Colorimetric and spectrophotometric methods quantify target analytes by measuring the intensity of a color reaction or light absorbance at a characteristic wavelength, correlating it to concentration via a calibration curve.

This standard provides a cost-effective, widely accessible analytical approach applicable to a broad range of analytes and sample types, making it valuable for routine quality control and environmental monitoring programs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A specific chemical reagent reacts with the analyte of interest to produce a colored compound. The intensity of the color, measured as absorbance at a characteristic wavelength, is proportional to the analyte concentration per Beer-Lambert's law.

Many analytes including ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, iron, manganese, chromium, and various organic compounds have established colorimetric methods using specific reagent chemistries.

The standard identifies known interferents and provides correction procedures, including blank subtraction, alternative wavelength measurement, or sample pre-treatment such as digestion, extraction, or pH adjustment.

Detection ranges vary widely by analyte and reagent but typically cover low ppb to percent-level concentrations. Sample dilution or concentration steps can extend the working range.

Spectrophotometric colorimetry is less sensitive and selective than ICP-OES but is significantly less expensive, simpler to operate, and suitable for routine single-analyte measurements where the highest detection limits are not required.
