ASTM C94 Ready-Mixed Concrete Testing Overview

ASTM C94/C94M is the standard specification for ready-mixed concrete – concrete that is batched and mixed at a central plant (or in a truck mixer) and delivered to the job site in a freshly mixed, unhardened state. It covers the requirements for the manufacture and delivery of ready-mixed concrete and defines what the producer must provide and the purchaser must specify. Because the concrete is made to the purchaser’s requirements and arrives ready to place, its quality must be verified on the fresh and hardened material to confirm it meets the order. Results are reported in inch-pound units (with SI equivalents).

Verifying ready-mixed concrete to C94 draws on a battery of standard fresh- and hardened-concrete tests. On the fresh concrete, slump (consistency/workability), air content, temperature, and density (unit weight) are measured, and specimens are cast for strength. On the hardened concrete, the cast cylinders are cured and broken to determine compressive strength at the specified ages. Together these confirm the delivered concrete matches the specified mix in workability, air entrainment, and strength.

ASTM C94 testing is fundamental to construction quality control and acceptance. It gives the purchaser, contractor, and engineer objective evidence that the concrete delivered to a project meets the specified strength and properties, supporting structural integrity and code conformance. The individual fresh and hardened tests it relies on are themselves standardized (slump per C143, air per C231/C173, strength per C39, sampling per C172, specimen preparation per C31), and C94 ties them together into the requirements for the supplied product.

ASTM C94 Ready-Mixed Concrete Testing Scope, Applications, and Benefits

    Scope

ASTM C94 covers verification of ready-mixed concrete against the specification’s requirements, using standard fresh- and hardened-concrete tests on representative samples taken at delivery.

Key aspects of the testing scope include:

    • Sampling – obtaining representative samples of fresh concrete at the point of delivery per ASTM C172
    • Slump – measuring consistency/workability by the slump test (ASTM C143), a primary check that the concrete matches the specified workability
    • Air content – determining entrained air by the pressure method (ASTM C231) or volumetric method (ASTM C173), important for freeze-thaw durability
    • Temperature – measuring fresh concrete temperature (ASTM C1064), which affects setting and strength development
    • Density / unit weight and yield – measuring fresh concrete density and calculating yield (ASTM C138)
    • Specimen casting and curing – making and curing strength test cylinders (ASTM C31)
    • Compressive strength – testing cured cylinders for compressive strength at specified ages (ASTM C39), the key acceptance property
    • Units – inch-pound with SI equivalents

    Applications

    • Construction quality control – routine verification of ready-mixed concrete delivered to building, infrastructure, and civil projects
    • Concrete acceptance testing – confirming delivered concrete meets the specified strength and properties for project and code acceptance
    • Ready-mix producer QC – verification by concrete producers that their product consistently meets the specification
    • Structural concrete verification – strength and air-content confirmation for structural elements where performance is critical
    • Pavement and flatwork – verifying concrete for slabs, pavements, and flatwork against the specified mix
    • Durability assurance – confirming air content for concrete exposed to freeze-thaw and de-icing environments
    • Dispute resolution – providing objective test data when the conformance of delivered concrete is in question

    Benefits

    • Confirms the concrete matches the order – the combination of slump, air, temperature, density, and strength tests verifies that the delivered ready-mixed concrete meets the specified mix in both fresh and hardened properties
    • Strength testing provides the key acceptance criterion – compressive strength at the specified age is the primary measure of whether the concrete meets its structural requirement
    • Air-content testing supports durability – verifying entrained air confirms the concrete will resist freeze-thaw damage in exposed applications
    • Fresh-concrete tests catch problems at delivery – slump, air, and temperature are measured before the concrete is placed, allowing non-conforming loads to be identified before they go into the structure
    • Standardized and code-recognized – C94 and its referenced test methods are universally recognized, so the results support acceptance and code conformance across construction projects
    • Objective basis for acceptance and disputes – documented test data provides a defensible basis for accepting concrete and for resolving any conformance disputes

    Frequently Asked Questions

No. ASTM C94 is a product specification covering concrete materials, ordering, batching, mixing, delivery, sampling and acceptance. Individual properties are measured using separate ASTM test methods referenced by the specification.

The specification covers central-mixed, shrink-mixed and truck-mixed concrete delivered to the purchaser in a fresh state. Concrete produced by volumetric batching and continuous mixing is covered separately by ASTM C685/C685M.

Common field tests include slump, temperature, air content and density or unit weight. Sampling is normally performed according to ASTM C172/C172M before these properties are measured.

Concrete consistency is commonly evaluated using ASTM C143/C143M. Fresh concrete is placed in a slump mould, consolidated and measured for vertical settlement after the mould is removed.

ASTM C138/C138M measures fresh-concrete density, yield and gravimetric air content. Yield helps verify whether the delivered batch provides the ordered volume of concrete.
