Small Volume Sample Testing

The Advantages of Small Volume Sample Testing: The use of small sample volumes for thermal conductivity testing offers a range of advantages, from convenience and accuracy to cost savings. The Modified Transient Plane Source (MTPS) sensor is particularly useful for this purpose, as it requires only a 1.5 mL sample for testing.

Using small volumes of sample for thermal conductivity testing offers several benefits. For one, it simplifies the testing process for researchers, allowing them to quickly prepare multiple tests with minimal material. This is especially important when testing expensive metal powders such as Ti-6Al-4V, which can cost more than $400 per kilogramme. Additionally, the small sample size reduces the risk of convection errors when measuring conductivity in liquids, as the interface between the liquid and the surrounding air is reduced. For powders, a small sample size helps to control the amount of interstitial air present, improving the accuracy of the results.

Overall, small volume sample testing for thermal conductivity offers a wide range of advantages. They allow for efficient testing of expensive materials, reduce convection errors, and provide reliable results.
