Tip-Over Integrity Testing

Tip-Over Integrity Testing is a crucial part of the shipping industry. It examines the ability of tall and top-heavy cases, crates, or unitized loads to stay upright at a certain angle. Tip testing also evaluates the resistance of the load to a potential tipping hazard.

Testing the stability of a load during transit can help detect any potential defects in its packaging. Damages to products or packaging caused by poor handling during delivery can be extremely costly and can cause a drop in sales, customer loyalty, and interruptions to the supply chain. Testing and certification can help to mitigate these costs.

Tip-over compliance tests begin by placing the package on the floor in its shipping orientation. It is then tilted 22 degrees in an unstable direction. If the box falls on its own at 22 degrees, it is considered to have passed the test. If not, it is upright. This is repeated for all unstable directions. After the test, engineers report the post-test item condition, test date, time, equipment description, content description, test procedures, drop angle, and height. They also record the dimensions of the case, crate, or unitized load.

Tip-over integrity compliance testing can offer a number of benefits. These include a reduction in product-to-market time, product launch confidence, reduced product loss and damage, cost-effective distribution, and improved consumer satisfaction and market share.
