    ASTM D6047 applies to diene concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 by mass %. Dienes like ENB and DCPD are added to ethylene/propylene rubbers to give certain curing qualities. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) approach was developed because high precision for diene content assessment has become critical. In the past, the diene was determined using a refractive index approach.

    Test Procedure:

    In ASTM D6047, the test specimen is molded between two PTFE-coated aluminum or Mylar sheets. Its infrared absorbance at 1605–1610 cm1 can calculate the ENB and DCPD content. The absorbance’s second derivative was calculated and compared to an internal thickness gauge. This process consists of two primary steps: automatic film thickness measurement and diene quantification.

    Test Specimen:

    Specimen size should be 0.20–0.05 grams.

    Where A, P, P0, and Ht is the absorbance, initial radiant power, final radiant power and peak height, respectively.
