Procedure for Guided Bend Test of Welds

Guided bend tests are done to determine the ductility of welds in metals. It is a quality control test that can be routinely carried out on the shop floor.

In the guided bend test, the welded metal specimen is placed in a three-point bend system such that it is supported by lower anvils and the weld is located at the center of the system. It is bent by 180 degrees by forcing a former/plunger at the center of the specimen after which it is examined for cracks. The exterior of the bend is plastically deformed so that any defects will be revealed by the premature failure of the material.

There are different standards that provide detailed specifications to perform the bend test, like ASTM E190, BS EN ISO 5173, and ASME IX. As per most specifications, a welded metal specimen is said to have failed the guided bend test if there is a defect of over 3 mm in length.
