FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE DIELECTRIC STRENGTH OF AN INSULATING MATERIAL

An insulating material’s capacity to endure an electric field without degrading or losing its insulating qualities is referred to as its dielectric strength. It can be influenced by a number of things, such as:

  • Typically, when the temperature rises, an insulation material’s dielectric strength drops-It roughly follows the relationship between absolute temperature and temperature. However, it is also important to remember that below room temperature the temperature variation does not affect.
  • It is significantly affected by mechanical loading because internal imperfections introduced by mechanical stress might act as leakage routes, and mechanically loaded insulators may exhibit much lower levels.
  • In dielectric the fabrication details have an impact on the material. In compression moulding injection ion moulding, for instance, flow lines or weld lines may act as leakage currents’ channels of least resistance, lowering the strength. It can be decreased to one-third of this usual value by even practically visible minute defects.
  • The type of voltage applied to an insulating material can also affect. For example, AC voltage can cause more stress on an insulating material than DC voltage.
  • Over time, the strength of an insulating material can decrease due to aging and exposure to environmental factors.
