ASTM A240 Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and General Applications

Scope:

This specification covers chromium, chromium-nickel, and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip for pressure vessels and general applications. 

Test procedure:

ASTM A240 is used to determine the standard specification for chemical composition and mechanical properties for the material. For Chemical composition, the Composition of carbon, manganese, phosphorous, sulfur, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper and other elements are determined. For the mechanical properties, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation hardness, and cold bend is determined. Yield strength is determined by the offset method at 0.2 %. an alternative method of determining yield strength may be based on the total extension under the load of 0.5 %.

Test Specimen:

The orientation of the specimens shall be longitudinal (long axis of the specimen parallel to the final rolling direction, the root of the notch perpendicular to the rolling face).
