    Scope:

    ASTM C371 is very important for determining the particle size distribution of powders which is then used to qualify those materials for their usefulness in the process under consideration. Particle size distribution plays an essential role in properties like bulk density, dustiness, and handling characteristics. A wet-sieve is useful to disperse agglomerates before performing the test.

    Test Procedure:

    In ASTM C371, 100g of the specimen is taken into a glass beaker. To this, 200 g of distilled water is added with a suitable dispersion agent. The resulting suspension is then poured into the finest sieve. When the sieving is complete, a sponge is passed over the underside of the sieve-cloth, and the sieve and specimen are dried thoroughly at 100 to 110°C. Then all the sieves are assembled, the nested sieves are separated, and the residue is removed carefully from each and weighed to the nearest 0.1 g. The result is calculated and reported as the cumulative percent passing.

    Specimen Size : 

    In ASTM C371, 100 g of the specimen is weighed with an accuracy to the nearest 0.1 g. The oven temperature is maintained between 100 and 110°C.

    The results obtained in ASTM C371 testing after sieve cumulative percent passing are interpreted for measuring the particle size.
