ASTM A1034 Testing Mechanical Splices for Steel Reinforcing Bars
ASTM A1034 test method describes the process of testing any mechanical splice for coated or uncoated steel reinforcing bars that aid in performance observance and strength measurements. The final results of the test method must be in SI units or inch-pound units.
ASTM A1034 determines the standard for measuring the performance and strength of bar slice assembly. It specifies the acceptability of a mechanical splice under specific design criteria for varied concrete structural members. Performance evaluation of the mechanical splices is dependent on the similarity of the materials and methods of assembly.
In ASTM A1034, the test specimen is placed in a testing machine with sufficient capacity. Elongation measuring devices are installed, and a baseline tension test is carried out once the specimen components have gained the required strength. The specimen undergoes various tests like monotonic tension, compression, cyclic load, high cycle fatigue, slip, and differential elongation tests.
Specimen Size :
The length of the test specimens used in ASTM A1034 should be such that the distance between the ends of the coupler and the grips does not exceed one bar diameter.
As per ASTM A1034, all the measurements are to be expressed in SI units or inch-pound units. The splice specimens shall be cold-soaked for a minimum of 24 h before testing for low-temperature testing.
