Test for Open Assembly Time of Carpet Mastic Adhesives ASTM D6325
ASTM D6325 describes the test to determine open assembly time for a trowelled carpet adhesive. The test adhesive is applied onto a glass plate and tackiness is tested at regular intervals of time by checking for extent of adherence onto test LDPE pieces. The open assembly time is expressed in minutes.
Scope:
Standard method ASTM D6325 describes the procedure to determine open assembly time for a trowelled carpet adhesive. It is important that sufficient assembly time should be available to an installer to prepare and place carpet sections for bonding onto the substrate. An adhesive with too short an open assembly time will not allow the installer to place the carpet before it completely dries out. Conversely, if the open assembly time is too long, then the adhesive will still be wet and cause movement of the carpet after placement, besides affecting the bond strength. The ASTM D6325 test can aid the adhesive manufacturer and the carpet installer to select the appropriate adhesive for the application.
It is stated in ASTM D6325 that the test method is modelled upon ASTM C679 (test for tack free time of elastomeric sealants). The ASTM D6325 variations relate to substrate, adhesive, the use of rigid LDPE pieces to test the tackiness, the time intervals and use of 1 kg deadweight.
Procedure:
Test specimens, as specified in ASTM D5215 section 8, are marked for identification. They are then heat-aged at 140 ±5 0F for seven days, followed by exposure to UVA light for 48 hours. Thereafter, comparative color measurements between test and control specimens are performed, using a colorimeter or spectrophotometer. The reflectance values measured by the instrument are converted to CIELAB color scale by computation.
Specimen size:
Each LDPE piece will be 2 inch × 2 inch × 0.006 inch. The glass piece should be 12 inch × 12 inch.
Result:
The ASTM D6325 open assembly time is expressed in minutes.
ASTM E572 test method covers the analysis of stainless and alloy steels by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (WDXRF). It provides rapid, multi-element determinations with sufficient accuracy to assure product quality.
The ASTM D2674 is a standard test method for the analysis of sulfochromate etches solution used in the surface preparation of aluminum. The ASTM D2674 standard specifies a method for determining the efficacy of an etchant used to prepare the surface of aluminum alloys for subsequent adhesive bonding.
An immunological method for quantization of Hevea Natural Rubber (HNRL) proteins using rabbit anti-HNRL serum. Rabbits immunized with HNRL proteins react to the majority of the proteins present, and their sera have the capability to detect most if not all the proteins in HNRL.
ASTM G65 measures the resistance of metallic materials to abrasion using the dry sand/rubber wheel apparatus. The quality, durability, and toughness of the sample are determined using this test. Metallic materials are ranked in their resistance to scratching abrasion under a controlled environment.
ASTM E2141 test methods provide accelerated aging and monitoring of the performance of time-dependent electrochromic devices (ECD) integrated in insulating glass units (IGU). This test helps to understand the relative serviceability of electrochromic glazings applied on ECD.
ASTM C724 test method is used in analyzing the quality and ease of maintenance of a ceramic decoration on architectural-type glass. This test method is useful in the acknowledgment of technical standards.
