Durability Assessment of Adhesive Joints Stressed in Peel ASTM D2918

The ASTM D2918 test technique uses T-peel type specimens stressed in contact with air, the air in equilibrium with specific solutions, water, aqueous solutions, or other conditions at various temperatures to determine the durability of adhesive connections.

    Scope:

    The ASTM D2918 standard test method is used to determine the durability of adhesive junctions in T-peel-type specimens. This test method can be utilized as an accelerated screening test for determining adhesive joint durability. It can be used to assess the durability of adhesive joints exposed to the elements or to the circumstances that adhesive joints face in service. 

    The ASTM D2918 test method can also be used to see how different surface preparations or substrates affect the durability of adhesive joins and can also examine the durability of different adhesives under controlled settings.

    Procedure:

    The specimens are inserted in the pin-type grips of the testing machine and heated uniformly in the bond region, according to the ASTM D2918 test technique. Prior to the bond temperature calibration test, a fake specimen is used to calibrate the temperature. The specimen is then put to the following test: Prior to applying load, no slack is allowed in the test fixture. The external thermocouple, which has been calibrated, regulates the temperature. For bondline temperature, the heating rate and time at a steady state are determined. The test temperature tolerance is kept to less than 1%. The test specimen is loaded to failure at a rate of 8.3 to 9.7 MPa unless otherwise stated. Each specimen’s load at failure, as well as the nature and extent of the failure, is recorded.

    Specimen size:

    Lap shear test specimens are used in the ASTM D2918 test procedure.

    Data:

    According to ASTM D2918, for certain end-use, only one set of test conditions may be sufficient to generate the required durability results.
