ASTM D4670 Determination of Suspended Matter in Polyols

The ASTM D4670 test method determines the process of detecting insoluble foreign materials in polyols. It helps detect t he suspended matter in the polyols that remains undissolved and settles as bulky sediment to the bottom. In this way, the solubility of the polyols can also be determined.... Scope:

The ASTM D4670 test method is important to determine the amount of insoluble content in polyols. It defines a standard to control the quality and application of these polyols. It characterizes the polyols found in polyurethane products and is applicable for research purposes. It uses visual inspection to determine the suspended matter in polyols which specifies their reliability and helps finalize their application. Since polyols are of two types, polyether or polyester, that are composed differently, this method helps determine the insoluble constituents that may be present in any of the two forms of polyols.

    Procedure:

The apparatus for ASTM D4670 testing consists of a glass bottle with an adequate amount of samples. The glass bottle is inverted and carefully observed for any insoluble foreign material in the sample. The sample is well-mixed to dissolve all of its contents fully and is observed for any suspended matter by transmitting light onto the inverted glass bottle. In this way, the undissolved contents are detected in different polyols such as polymer polyols, polyether polyols, polyester polyols, and amine-started polyols.

    Specimen size:

The specimen size is taken as per the requirements. In this case, the specimen or sample size can vary with the glass bottle size taken for experimentation purposes.

    Data:

The presence or absence of suspended matter or insoluble foreign materials is reported in the polyols on visual inspection of the sample.

    Conclusion:

The ASTM D4670 test method is important to determine the amount of insoluble content in polyols.
