ASTM D4218 Determination of Carbon Black Content in Polyethylene Compounds
The ASTM D4218 test method uses the Muffle-Furnace technique to determine the presence of channel or furnace black in black polyethylene compounds. This testing process can generate duplicate test data in 20 minutes or less for a simple carbon black content measurement.
Scope:
ASTM D4218 test method is used to determine the carbon black content in polyethylene compounds by the Muffle-Furnace technique. The muffle furnace is an important laboratory testing tool that is used to test a variety of materials. With this technique, ASTM D4218 is aimed to provide improved temperature uniformity and isolate heated materials from combustion pollutants. This test method provides high performance and is appropriate for quality control in manufacturing, technical support, and research. The test is conducted at high temperatures ranging from 600°C to 900°C.
Procedure:
For ASTM D1418, a black polyethylene compound enclosed in a disposable aluminum weighing dish is pyrolyzed for a brief period in a muffle furnace. The air in the muffle furnace becomes oxygen-deficient during the pyrolysis of the polymer, preventing the residual carbon black from being burned. Any soot generated during the early combustion of the gasses is consumed before the carbon black. After cooling, the carbon black residue is weighed. The dish and contents can be reinserted into the muffle furnace to determine the ash content, with the findings being used to calculate the true carbon black content.
Specimen size
The ASTM D1418 test specimen may be in the form of granules or pieces cut from an article such as a pipe, jacket, film, molding, etc.
Data:
In ASTM D1418, the percent carbon black content is calculated as follows :
where,
W1, W2, W3, and W4 are the weights of the dish at four different times during the whole test procedure.
Conclusion:
ASTM D4218 test method is used to determine the carbon black content in polyethylene compounds by the Muffle-Furnace technique.
ASTM E572 test method covers the analysis of stainless and alloy steels by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (WDXRF). It provides rapid, multi-element determinations with sufficient accuracy to assure product quality.
The ASTM D2674 test is a standard test method for the analysis of sulfochromate etch solutions used in the surface preparation of aluminum. The ASTM D2674 standard specifies a method for determining the efficacy of an etchant used to prepare the surface of aluminum alloys for subsequent adhesive bonding.
An immunological method for quantization of Hevea Natural Rubber (HNRL) proteins using rabbit anti-HNRL serum. Rabbits immunized with HNRL proteins react to the majority of the proteins present, and their sera have the capability to detect most if not all the proteins in HNRL.
ASTM G65 measures the resistance of metallic materials to abrasion using the dry sand/rubber wheel apparatus. The quality, durability, and toughness of the sample are determined using this test. Metallic materials are ranked in their resistance to scratching abrasion under a controlled environment.
ASTM E2141 test methods provide accelerated aging and monitoring of the performance of time-dependent electrochromic devices (ECD) integrated in insulating glass units (IGU). This test helps to understand the relative serviceability of electrochromic glazings applied on ECD.
ASTM C724 test method is used in analyzing the quality and ease of maintenance of a ceramic decoration on architectural-type glass. This test method is useful in the acknowledgment of technical standards.
