ASTM D494 Acetone Extraction of Phenolic Products

The amount of acetone-soluble materials in molded or laminated phenolic goods can be determined using ASTM D494. Acetone is required in this test because it has a low boiling point and evaporates very quickly. The values expressed in SI units should be considered standard.... Read More

    Scope:

The standard test method ASTM D494 is a valuable technique for acetone extraction of phenolic products. Acetone extraction shall be treated simply as a quantitative expression of a feature generally related to the degree of cure for molded phenolic products. The numerical value of the acetone test has no demonstrable strict relationship with the optimum mechanical and electrical qualities of a well-cured component.

    Test Procedure:

ASTM D494 is performed according to OSHA’s Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL) and Time Weighted Average (TWA) standards. The procedure is continued in triplicate by accurately weighing 3000 g of the powdered sample, and then a filter paper is folded and pressed into a siphon. The rate should be carefully maintained, and the sample is extracted for 4 h.

    Specimen Size :

ASTM D494 requires 50 mL of acetone, 3.000 g of powdered sample, and a filter paper of 12.5 to 15 cm in diameter.

    Data:

    Acetone – extractable matter, % = [(W – D)/S] × 100

    Conclusion:

The standard test method ASTM D494 is a valuable technique for acetone extraction of phenolic products.
