Analytical chemistry testing is a highly specialized field that requires a variety of instruments and tools to accurately determine the composition or properties of a sample. Chromatography (GC & HPLC) is used to check for plasticizers according to ASTM D1045, monomers and oligomers, flame retardants, and other chemicals. Heavy metals can be tested using DCP, AAS, I-C, and XRF, and spectroscopy such as FT-IR, UV-VIS, and fluorescence can classify polymers and resins.

Using UV-Vis Scanning Spectrophotometry with GC, it is possible to test for color, UV inhibitors, chemical permeability, additives, weathering, and stability according to ASTM standards. In the food and nutrition industry, AOAC methods can be used to analyze fats, proteins, carbs, vitamins, minerals, and trans fats. HACCP and organic food validation can be conducted with microbial and PCR-DNA analyzers.
