IEEE 1725 and IEEE 1625 Battery Certification

CTIA accreditation is required of manufacturers who offer cells, batteries, adapters, and gadgets to the country’s top telecommunications companies. The Criteria for Reusable Batteries for Cellular Telephones are covered by CTIA IEEE 1725, whereas the Requirements for Rechargeable Battery for Laptop and Tablet Computers are covered by CTIA IEEE 1625. The contents of battery design, manufacture, installation, leaky protection, overcharge, mechanical properties, and quality control are also governed by these standards. The usage of batteries in consumer goods is increasing at an exponential rate. As a result, understanding lithium-ion battery safety became crucial for US importers.

Manufacturers have worked to extend battery working durations while lowering the total weight of the battery and the battery-powered device due to the proliferation of batteries and the shrinking of portable items. As a result, battery compositions that pack more energy into smaller packaging have emerged.

Implications:

  • Lithium-ion, lithium battery polymer, and lithium metal batteries are high-energy chemical batteries that are thinner, cheaper, and lower weight than standard rechargeable and non-rechargeable ones.
  • Traditional battery chemistries, such as lead-acid, may cause fires and explosions, but the combination of high-energy combustible chemistry packed into a compact container needs particular precautions to reduce the risk of fire and explosion.
  • High-energy density batteries require strengthened safety mechanisms and extra caution while using and handling them, both within and outside the device, and batteries must be thoroughly tested with the device, in its original purpose, and with the charger as a whole.
  • Some lithium-ion batteries, battery packs, and rechargeable batteries used in cellular phones, portable computer devices, personal electronic devices, and electric scooters have been recalled (hoverboards). Many other batteries have also been recalled, including those used in rechargeable battery ride-on toys as portable battery-powered gadgets.
  • Overheating, fire, electrical shocks from charging devices, thermal burns, alkaline battery electrolyte exposure, and high-velocity expelled interior components of batteries are all potential threats.
