    Scope:

ASTM D1623 tests the tensile and tensile adhesion properties of rigid cellular plastics materials and foam. Different types of test samples are used by the standard, applying to urethanes, polyurethanes, sandwich panels, and adhesive applications. This test method uses a standard procedure for calculating the tensile and tensile adhesion properties of rigid cellular plastics under defined conditions of temperature, humidity, and testing machine speed.

    Test Procedure:

ASTM D1623 test method requires the use of a testing machine which is constant-rate-of-crosshead-movement type, an extension indicator, self-aligning type grips for holding test specimens; and a lathe specimen cutter. Firstly, the cross-sectional dimensions of the test specimen is measured to the nearest 0.025 mm at several points and the minimum value for the specimen is recorded. Tensile properties are measured using any of three types (A, B, and C) of specimens. Type A specimens are employed when enough sample material is available to form the required specimen. Type B is utilized when smaller specimens are available, such as in sandwich panels. Type C specimen is preferred for determining tensile adhesive properties of a cellular plastic to a substrate like in a sandwich panel (top and bottom substrate), or the bonding strength of a cellular plastic to a single substrate.

    Specimen size:

Any type A, B, or C specimen can be used as per the availability.

    Data:

Tensile strength is reported in terms of tensile modulus.

    Conclusion:

ASTM D1623 deals with the determination of tensile properties of plastics under specific conditions. The results aid in enhancing their quality keeping in view the global standards.
