The ASTM C927 test is used to determine how much lead and cadmium has been removed from the lip and rim area of glass tumblers with ceramic glass enamels on the exterior. This is a lead and cadmium-specific test technique. The number of metals gathered from one test specimen in comparison to another test specimen can be utilized to distinguish between them. This ASTM C927 test can help speed the removal of lead and cadmium from the decorated area.
For ASTM C927 test, lead and cadmium are extracted from the test sample’s lip and rim region by leaching it for 24 hours in a 4% acetic acid solution at (20 to 24°C), then quantified using atomic absorption spectrophotometry with appropriate hollow cathode or electrodeless discharge lamps for lead and cadmium, respectively. The detection limits for lead and cadmium for specific instruments are then reported. The results are presented as a percentage of the internal volume of the glass sample in micrograms per milliliter (ppm). The detection limits for lead range from 0.01 to 0.03 µg/mL and for cadmium range from 0.0005 to 0.0010 µg/mL .
