Coated Fabrics Abrasion Resistance ASTM D3389

ASTM D3389 determines the wear resistance of fabrics coated with rubber or plastics to abrasion. This standard test method uses a rotary platform, double-head abrader for evaluation of abrasion resistance of coated fabrics.


    ASTM D3389 test is used for determining the abrasion resistance of fabrics coated with plastics or rubber in end-use performance conditions. This test has two methods: Method A for abrasion to endpoint and Method B for abrasion for a specified number of cycles with determining mass loss.

    Test Procedure:

    In the ASTM D3389 test, firstly the original weight of the test sample is measured, then the sample is mounted on an abrasion tester. A load stated by ASTM D3389 is placed on the top of the abrader wheel and then the wheel is allowed to spin for a stated number of revolutions. Various abrading wheels are run and the final weight is taken. The wheel and load can be regulated for harder and softer materials. 

    Sample size:

    The test samples are cut approximately 100 mm (21.5 inches) in diameter. The hole of 6 mm (0.25 inches) is cut in the center of the sample. 


    Results are expressed by changes in weight loss in mg/number of cycles.
