    In a uniaxial tension test, this test method is useful for finding the strain at the commencement of necking. In practice, it serves as an empirical criterion for assessing the relative importance of various factors comparable to metallic systems’ stretch formability.


    The decreased portion of the specimen’s original thickness is measured and recorded first. The specimen is gripped in the testing machine in such a way that it doesn’t fall out. The specimen is ensured to be axially aligned. The testing pace is fast enough for the loads and the results to be accurate. The strains are correctly identified. During the strain, the speed setting is not modified. For at least five days, the load and its related strain are recorded. Strain values are obtained that are about evenly spaced for the computation of “n” in at least five stress and strain values every interval.

    Specimen size

    The metallic sheet material must have a thickness of at least 0.005 in. (0.13 mm)


    True stress can be calculated by the formula where the strength coefficient is multiplied with the true plastic strain raised to the power strain hardening component.
