ASTM E601-07a test method determines the electromotive force stability of base-metal Thermoelement materials at a specific temperature by the application of a single emf indicator or dual emf indicators. The temperature for the test is established by the use of a platinum thermocouple. This method also provides information about the stability of thermoelements.
ASTM E601-07a test method covers the emf properties of base-metal thermoelements. The stability and reliability of materials can be determined. The thermoelement junction is prepared by welding the junctions together to provide good thermal contact. The specimens are electrically insulated, and the thermoelements are inserted into the insulating tubes. The reference junction is prepared and placed in a tube furnace heated to a specified temperature. The emf measuring instrument and reference junctions are connected through copper extensions. The emf readings are taken, and the method is repeated to ensure accurate results.
Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this case, the length of the specimen should be a minimum of0.8m.
The emf can be calculated by applying a formula where E stands for emf, T stands for temperature, and S represents the Seebeck Coefficient.
