ASTM E465 – 11 Determination of Manganese (IV) in Manganese Ores by Redox Titrimetry
ASTM E465 – 11 explains the determination of manganese dioxide in manganese ore. The results are expressed as manganese dioxide. It is done by two methods (Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate) and (Periodate (Sodium Oxalate) interchangeably. Redox titrimetry is being performed. The values are stated in SI units as they’re considered standard units.
ASTM E465 – 11 is a highly significant method as it is used in compliance with compositional specifications for manganese dioxide. This method is performed by trained analysts, who perform common laboratory practices skillfully and safely. Therefore, it is of great significance.
By Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate, the sample is first mixed in a ferrous ammonium sulfate solution. The manganese dioxide then reacts with ferrous iron. The excess ferrous iron is titrated with a standard potassium dichromate solution.
By Sodium Oxalate, the sample is mixed in sulfuric acid in the presence of sodium oxalate. The manganese dioxide reacts with an equal amount of oxalate. The excess sodium oxalate is titrated with potassium permanganate solution.
The sample shall pass a No. 100 (150-μm) sieve.
