ASTM E18 Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials

ASTM E18 determines the Rockwell hardness of metallic materials. The Rockwell indentation hardness principle is used for the Rockwell superficial hardness and Rockwell hardness of metallic materials. Force and length are represented in the SI unit.

    Scope:

The ASTM E18 method provides valuable information about metallic materials. Rockwell hardness tests are considered agreeable for recognition testing of viable shipments and have been used widely in the industry for this purpose. It also gives the ability to trace the national Rockwell hardness standards.

    Procedure:

As per ASTM E18, the hardness measurements are made only on the standardized surface of the text block. The test piece is held rigidly to minimize the test surface. There are many designs of Rockwell hardness machines that require various levels of operator control. The indenter is brought, the preliminary test force is applied, the force is increased and maintained, then the additional test force is removed.

    Specimen size:

The temperature should be within the limits of 10 to 35°C. The preliminary test force F0 should be 10 kgf (98 N) for the Rockwell hardness test and 3 kgf (29 N) for the Rockwell superficial hardness test as per ASTM E18 guidelines.

    Data

The Rockwell hardness number is calculated as

    Rockwell Hardness= 100-h/0.002

    Rockwell Superficial Hardness=100-h/0.001

    Conclusion:

The ASTM E18 method provides valuable information about metallic materials.
