ASTM D8036-16 Determination of dimer ratio in pure MDI
ASTM D8036-16 measures the ratio of the infrared absorbance of uretidinedione (dimer) in methylene-4,4’- di-(phenyl isocyanate) to an infrared absorbance at a reference wavelength within the same material. The final results are expressed as per international standards.
ASTM D8036-16 is useful to determine the dimer ratio of Pure MDI; this test method can be utilized for research or quality control. It applies to monomeric methylene-di(phenyl isocyanate), often known as “Pure MDI,” which contains 95 percent or more methylene-4,4′-diisocyanate (phenyl isocyanate).
This method, ASTM D8036-16, involves scanning an open-path background to average, using a resolution of 4 cm–1 or better and at least 16 scans. The first 4.5 to 5.5 g of sample is transferred to a dry, 25-mL volumetric flask with a glass stopper and diluted with dichloromethane to volume, and thoroughly mixed. The cell is filled with this solution using the glass syringe and the same resolution and number of scans to record the absorbance spectrum from 1600 to 2000 cm–1. Using baseline locations of around 1949 and 1848 cm–1, the height is measured from the reference peak maximum at roughly 1900 cm–1. Using baseline points of around 1812 and 1760 cm–1, the height of the dimer peak maximum is measured at roughly 1778 cm–1.
Dichloromethane solution samples must be recorded in the 1600 to 2000 cm–1 region.
Dimer Ratio in pure MDI is determined by applying the formula as per the international standards.
