    The ASTM D7704 test technique is used to determine the number of aldehydic compounds in a product for quality control and assurance. A standard alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution is used to titrate the amount of hydrochloric acid generated, equal to the amount of aldehyde contained in the sample.

    Specimen size:

    The specimen should be conditioned between 0.001 to 0.030 mass percent.


    The following formula is used in ASTM D7704 testing to calculate the percentage of aldehyde as benzaldehyde:

    Aldehydes, mass % =[(A-B-C) × N × 0.106) / 25 × D] × 100

    A = KOH solution required for titration 

    B = KOH solution required for titration 

    C = KOH solution required for titration of styrene 

    N = normality of KOH solution 

    D = density of styrene monomer.
