ASTM D7704 Determining total Aldehydes in Styrene Monomer

ASTM D7704 is a method for the wet chemical determination of aldehydic components in styrene monomer. Amount of benzaldehyde is computed to report the total amount of aldehydes.


    The ASTM D7704 test technique is used to determine the number of aldehydic compounds in a product for quality control and assurance. A standard alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution is used to titrate the amount of hydrochloric acid generated, equal to the amount of aldehyde contained in the sample.

    Specimen size:

    The specimen should be conditioned between 0.001 to 0.030 mass percent.


    The following formula should calculate the percentage of aldehyde as benzaldehyde:

    Aldehydes, mass % = [(A̶ B̶ C) ×N ×0.106)/25 ×D] ×100

    A = KOH solution required for titration 

    B = KOH solution required for titration 

    C = KOH solution required for titration of styrene 

    N = normality of KOH solution 

    D = density of styrene monomer.
