ASTM D7513-09 The capacity of Mixed Bed Ion Exchange Cartridges

ASTM D7513-09 determines the performance of mixed bed ion exchange resin cartridges in the active form when deionized. The values expressed in SI units are considered as standard.


    ASTM D7513-09 is used to determine the initial capacity of unused cartridges, evaluate unused mixed bed ion exchange cartridges for conformance to specifications, and calculate capacity on a cartridge basis. This test method is also important to test different mixed bed resin cartridges.


    This test strategy is debilitating a cartridge of blended bed particle trade material to a particular endpoint with an influent arrangement of known synthesis and volume. The profluent conductivity of each volumetric augmentation equivalent to 2 Vc is measured and recorded. The process is continued until the 1.0 μS/cm value is achieved; then, at that point, the volume of test water handled to a 1.0 μS/cm endpoint (V1) in liters is recorded.

    Specimen size:

    Cartridge and pressure vessel are required.


    Capacity, meq/cartridge = C × VT

    Where C is the concentration of total electrolytes in the test water expressed in mill equivalents per liter and VT is the volume of test water used, per cartridge, liters.
