    Scope:

    ASTM D6580 test method is used to determine the quantity of metallic zinc in zinc dust pigment as well as dried films of inorganic and organic zinc-rich coatings. This method is quite useful in examining zinc dust.

    Procedure:

    In ASTM D6580 pulverized samples of zinc-dust pigment or cured films of zinc-rich coatings are weighed into standard differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) sample pans. The pans are tested in a differential scanning calorimeter under nitrogen purge in a single dynamic heating phase ranging from 370 to 435°C at 10°C per minute. The energy associated with the endothermic peak around 419°C caused by the melting of the zinc is measured and compared to the heat of fusion produced by pure zinc.

    Specimen size:

    For the ASTM D6580 test, the sample should be conditioned at 370°C at a rate of 10°C per minute.

    Data:

    The percentage of metallic zinc in a sample can be calculated as:

    Percent zinc metal = (X/108) × 100

    where,

    X= heat of fusion of the sample

    Conclusion:

    ASTM D6580 includes the measurement of the metallic zinc content of zinc-dust pigment and dried films of zinc-rich coatings using differential scanning calorimetry.
