    Scope:

    ASTM D6480-05 is used to assess building surfaces, including ceiling tiles, shelving, electrical components, ductwork, and so on. This test method generates an index of asbestos structure concentration per unit area sampled based on a quantitative assessment of the number of asbestos structures found during analysis.

    Procedure

    In ASTM D6480-05 test, a sample is collected by wiping a known area. Then the sample is transferred from the wiping substance to a known volume aqueous suspension. A membrane filter is used to filter aliquots of the suspension. A portion of the membrane filter is manufactured and transferred to a TEM grid using the direct transfer approach. TEM is used to identify, size, and count the asbestiform structures identified, sized, and counted using ED and EDXA at magnifications ranging from 15 000 to 20 000 ×.

    Test Apparatus

    Disposable Wet Towels, Masking Tape, Measuring Tape, Powderless, Rubber Gloves, Sample containers are required. Density of the liquid in the glass sample container is  1.0 g/cm³.

    Calculation in ASTM D6480-05 is done using the below formula

    R = 4.185 S D (q1 – q2) ÷ t

    Where 4.185 = joules/calorie, R = energy deposition, W/mL, q1 = temperature rise with the ultrasonic bath not operating °C, q2 = temperature rise with the ultrasonic bath operating °C, t = time, s (see 21.4.3.3), S = specific heat of the liquid in the glass sample container (0.2389 J/g), and D = density of the liquid in the glass sample container (1.0 g/cm3).
