ASTM D6150 Estimating Processing Losses of Plastisols and Organosols Due to Volatility

The ASTM D6150 test method describes a procedure for the determination of the relative volatility of polyvinyl chloride plastisols and organosols at elevated temperatures. The performance of specimens assessed by this method is quantified in terms of the SI units.... Read More

    Scope:

The ASTM D6150 is a standard test procedure for calculating plastisol and organosols processing losses owing to volatility. The weight loss during processing is influenced by the volatile components of plastisols or organosols. Furthermore, for estimating the volatiles emitted by plastisol or organosols during processing, this information may be beneficial to the manufacturer and user, as well as for environmental concerns. The results acquired using this test method are not strictly identical to those achieved during product production, as temperature, airflow, coating mass, and configuration can all differ significantly.

    Test procedure:

For the ASTM D6150 test, plastisols or organosols are weighed in metal plates and baked for 10  minutes at 177 °C in a circulating air oven. The specimens are taken out of the oven, cooled, and weighed once again. Weight loss is calculated and given as a percentage of weight loss per unit area of the exposed surface.

    Specimen size:

Samples of plastisols and organosols are used as test specimens for the ASTM D6150 test procedure.

    Data:

As per the ASTM D6150 test method, the percent volatile matter, V, in the plastisol or organosols is calculated as follows:

    where:

W1= weight of the aluminum foil dish

W₂ = weight of the dish plus specimen

W3 = weight of the dish plus specimen after heating

    Conclusion:

The ASTM D6150 is a standard test procedure for calculating plastisol and organosols processing losses owing to volatility.
