    Scope

    In ASTM D6120, for successful aluminum cell functioning, the electrical resistivity of the anode and cathode carbon materials is critical. It is a quality measure that indicates whether an anode or cathode is suitable for an aluminum cell.

    Procedure

    In the ASTM D6120 test procedure, the voltage drops or electrical resistance is measured between two spots along the length of a carbon cylinder after an electrical current is conducted through it. The voltage drops or electrical resistance, the distance between the two sites, and the cross-sectional area of the cylinder are used to calculate the resistivity.

    Specimen size

    For ASTM D6120, the specimen diameter is conditioned at 50mm, and the minimum length between the two copper plates is 120mm.

    Cross sectional area is calculated as:

    A=d24

    A = Cross sectional area

    d = Diameter

    Electrical resistivity is calculated by using the formula:

    ER=VAIL

    ER= electrical resistivity

    A= cross-sectional area

    L= distance between two contact points

    I= intensity of electrical current
