Apparent Hoop Tensile Strength ASTM D2290

Apparent Hoop Tensile Strength test by ASTM D2290 studies the apparent tensile strength of plastic pipes. A specialized test fixture is used to pull apart a sample ring of pipe cut from a larger plastic or reinforced plastic pipe. Apparent composite tensile strength of plastic or reinforced plastic products is determined using this test.

    Scope:

    ASTM D2290 test is used for determining the comparative apparent tensile strength of plastic or reinforced plastic products. The test utilizes a split disk or ring segment test fixture under stated conditions of pretreatment, humidity, temperature, and test machine speed. This test procedure is useful for reinforced-thermosetting resin pipes and extruded and molded thermoplastic pipes.

    Test Procedure:

    The size and geometry of the test sample are taken according to the pipe material as specified by ASTM D2290 guidelines. The sample is mounted in the self-aligning split disk figure and a load is applied to the sample at a uniform speed stated by the test standard. The test is continued until failure or all yield and maximum loaded are noted. 

    Sample size:

    The sample size for different procedures is stated by ASTM D2290 guidelines. A minimum of five samples is required to get a reliable average for a sample.
